One of PECOM's underlying themes is to honor the work that women are already doing. According to the 2000 census (can't wait to see what the 2010 census reveals) -- occupations with the highest number of females in Minnesota:
1. Secretaries and Administrative Assistants
2. Elementary and Middle School Teachers
3. Registered Nurses
4. Bookkeeping, Accounting and Auditing Clerks
5. Customer Services Representatives
6. Accountants and Auditors
7. First-Line Supervisors/Managers of Office and Administrative Support Workers
8. First-Line Supervisors/Managers of Retail Sales Workers
9. Child Care Workers
10. Nursing, Psychiatric, and Home Health Aides
While we argue about whether or not women can be engineers (translation -- can make more money) -- lets not lose sight of the fact that they are not now -- and never have been engineers in large numbers. So attention must be placed on how we compensate women now -- based on their skills, responsibility, problem solving ability, working conditions and accountability.
